How We See Data
FII’s uses data and data-tracking for several purposes:- Data collected by families enrolled in FII’s demonstration projects reveal indicators of progress.
- The data-tracking system also functions as an intervention. Like a dieter keeping a food journal, data-tracking system helps families stay focused on goals and track their progress over time.
- FII’s data-tracking system contains a five-star rating structure for families to rate the programs and services they use. Much like various popular online user review sites, FII collects feedback from families on organizations and programs directed at low-income people. Ultimately, this structure will provide low-income consumers with a way to provide direct feedback to service providers and funders.
Our Results
Among FII’s community empowerment innovations are its demonstrations in Oakland, San Francisco, Oahu, and Boston. Family groups determine their own priorities and are given the opportunity to earn up to $2,000 a year for a two-year commitment that involves monthly meetings and documenting actions in an online data-tracking system.
The significant outcomes from every FII project evidence the great potential for large-scale community impact. The impressive ripple effect from the first wave of FII families has multiplied the impact, as hundreds of families are now involved in Boston and San Francisco.
Direct Outcomes: Earnings & Assets
Families have demonstrated significant near- and long- term economic gains as well as a host of other outcomes that show increased control over their life trajectories.

Other outcomes include: catalyzing local leaders, families leaving welfare, and increased civic engagement. Follow-up surveys show that this trajectory of progress continues after families complete the two-year commitment.
