Although over 50% of the San Francisco pilot families are considered to be extremely low income (below 30% of the local median income), the initial 3- 6 month data indicates they are making tremendous progress. Two of the families have worked together to buy homes and 40% of the school aged children have improved their grades. These families also want to help their neighbors and friends and they have nominated over a dozen additional families to FII.
FII has received requests to begin pilots across the country, but on the short term we will concentrate on a California wide demonstration. With support from a variety of State and local officials, FII will work with a diverse set of communities to catalyze change on the ground as well as impact policies that can encourage self sustaining positive changes in communities that had previously made little or no progress to self sufficiency.
